Moods   FrenchSpanishgerman

Starter

The teacher should prepare short phrases or outbursts that are to be delivered in a particular mood, eg angry, sad, worried, bored, etc. Students listen and determine the teacher’s mood for each statement. This activity serves the teaching objective best if the statements use a level of language or a vocabulary unfamiliar to the students.

The handout provides a table for students to record their answers. Students may benefit from having the moods written on the handout so that they only need to number each one as they hear them. The activity can be extended to allow students, rather than the teacher, to read out the short pre-prepared statements, so that the focus is more on speaking rather than just listening.

Plenary

Discussion topics include:

  • Non-verbal clues to mood.
