Islamic Foundations

This section of Complete RE is devoted to the study of Islam and its origins. Islam is an almost universal faith, with adherents in most countries of the world. Some nation states are governed by Islamic principles and their laws reflect many of the ideas written down in the Qur’an. Islam, like Christianity, has its origins in Judaism, and shares with these other two religions some of the most sacred sites in the world, especially in North Africa, Saudi Arabia and Palestine.

A generic approach is taken here to the study of Islam, since the differences between the traditions are regarded as too complex for study at Key Stage 3. You are, however, encouraged to celebrate the diversity of expressions of the Muslim faith, acknowledging that the Ummah (the worldwide community of Islam) covers every continent and most nation states.

Experience shows that Muslim children in our schools are very keen to have Islam presented to their peers in a positive and accurate manner, and will be happy to point out errors in your knowledge or understanding. You are therefore advised to prepare thoroughly for teaching this body of work by familiarising yourself with the materials below to the best of your ability. You might also spend some time going through the virtual visit to see at first hand some of the things which your students will be learning.
