Using Adobe Acrobat Reader
Opening PDF files
Once installed, Adobe Acrobat Reader will enable you to view, navigate, and print documents provided in Adobe portable document format (PDF). To open a PDF file, start Adobe Acrobat Reader, then choose FILE>OPEN. In the dialog box that appears, select the appropriate file and click on OPEN. You can also open a PDF file by double-clicking on its icon when browsing files.
There may also be links to PDF files from a Web page (as in the interface to InContexT: SEN). To open the PDF document click on the link. The file will then either be opened in your browser or in a separate window, depending on your operating system and browser configuration. Some browsers may not support this feature.
Magnifying the page view
Once your document is open, you can change the page magnification from 8.33% to 6400%. To increase the magnification use one of the following methods:
- Select the zoom tool (which looks like a magnifying glass) and click on the document to increase the magnification.
- Select the zoom tool and use it to draw a rectangle around the area to be magnified.
- Select the magnification box in the status bar and choose a magnification level from the list.
- Select VIEW>ZOOM IN.
- Select VIEW>ZOOM TO, type in the magnification you require and click on OK.
You can decrease the magnification by holding down the Control key (or the Option key when using a Macintosh computer) when you use the zoom tool, or by going to TOOLS>ZOOM OUT.
Other magnification features include:
- VIEW>FIT PAGE which scales the page to fit the main part of the window.
- VIEW>FIT WIDTH which scales the page to fit the width of the window.
- VIEW>FIT VISIBLE which scales the page (excluding margins) to fit the width of the window.
Paging through a document
There are several ways of viewing the different pages in a PDF document.
To move forward one page:
- Click on the next page button in the tool bar (an arrow pointing to the right).
- Press the right arrow or down arrow on the keyboard.
- Choose VIEW>GO TO>NEXT PAGE.
To move back one page:
- Click on the previous page button in the tool bar (an arrow pointing to the left).
- Press the left arrow or up arrow on the keyboard.
- Choose VIEW>GO TO>PREVIOUS PAGE.
To go to the first page:
- Click on the first page button in the tool bar (an arrow facing to the left with a line next to it).
- Press the Home key on the keyboard.
- Choose VIEW>GO TO>FIRST PAGE.
To go to the last page:
- Click on the last page button in the tool bar (an arrow facing to the right with a line next to it).
- Press the End key on the keyboard.
- Choose VIEW>GO TO>LAST PAGE.
To go to a specific page number, choose VIEW>GO TO>PAGE, type the page number and click on OK.
Note that page numbers shown in the Adobe Acrobat Reader window will differ from those displayed on the printed page. Page references within a document refer to the page number shown when printed.
Navigating with bookmarks and thumbnails
The PDF files are provided with bookmarks and thumbnails (pages). A bookmark provides a link to a particular page, or part of a page. A thumbnail is a miniature view of a page of the document. You can choose to display a list of bookmarks or thumbnails next to the view of a page. When each PDF file is opened, the bookmarks will normally be shown at the left-hand side of the window. You can click on the tabs at the top to switch between bookmark and thumbnail view.
You can jump quickly to a particular section of a file by clicking on one of the bookmarks. Sometimes more than one bookmark refers to the same page.
Thumbnails can be used both to move between pages and to change the portion of a page which is in view. To move to a particular page, double-click on the thumbnail of that page. The point at which you click on the thumbnail determines the centre of the page display.
To change the portion of the page which is in view by using thumbnails:
- Place the pointer over the lower right corner of the page view box (the light-grey box) in the thumbnail of the current page. When the pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, drag the corner of the box to reduce or expand the view of the page.
- Use the hand tool to move around the current page by dragging the page view box on the thumbnail.
If these shortcuts are not visible, you can see them by using the show/hide navigation pane button on the toolbar (which looks like a document with boxes down the left-hand side), or choosing VIEW>NAVIGATION TABS>PAGES. They can be removed again by the same methods.
Following links
There can be links within a PDF document to a Web page, another application or another PDF document. To access these links, move the pointer over the link so that it changes from an arrow to a hand with a pointing finger. If the link is a Web link, the hand will be accompanied by a letter W. Click on the link to follow it. Links to Web pages will normally require that you have an Internet connection available. Clicking on a link may also change the page view or play a movie or sound.
Printing PDF documents
Select the printing options you require from FILE>PRINT SETUP. When you are ready to print, choose FILE>PRINT. By default, all pages are printed. You can also select to print the current page or type a range of pages to print into the FROM and TO boxes.
Viewing PDF files in a separate window
If you would prefer Adobe Acrobat Reader not to open PDF files within your Web browser, you can set it up to use a separate window as follows:
- Start Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Choose EDIT>PREFERENCES>INTERNET
- Deselect 'Display PDF in browser' in the Options section and then click OK
- Exit Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Restart your Web browser.
Go back to Help.
