Advantages of PDFs
PDF files have a number of advantages:
- Use PDF files onscreen or printed out – Pages in each file can be enlarged or reduced as appropriate, using the page magnification tools. A zoom feature is provided, which can be of great assistance to the visually impaired. Alternatively, high-quality printouts are possible from almost any computer.
- Resources are readily searchable – In each file, a visual index is provided as ‘thumbnails’. Page headings are shown as ‘bookmarks’. The ‘find’ function allows you to search for words or phrases.
- Interactive use – PDF files can include Web links to enable direct access to referenced Web sites.
- Material can be personalised – The files provided allow you to copy both text and graphics and then paste them into other applications, where they can be edited. The original PDF file remains unchanged, so you need not worry about losing your original source.
- Fully networkable – Once copied onto a server, the files can be accessed across a network and allow multiple simultaneous access.
- Inherently cross-platform – PDF files and Adobe Reader work equally well on computers running Microsoft® Windows and Mac OS.
To find out more about using Adobe Reader, see the onscreen help within the software itself.
