Self-evaluation

A key message of the current inspection process is that schools – and departments – should evaluate their progress themselves; this is complemented from time to time with an external inspection. It is therefore important that every department has sufficient evidence to show Ofsted that such processes of internal evaluation are in place.

The emphasis on self-evaluation is very important. Managing departmental evaluation is a crucial part of the role of a head of Science. No matter how tidy the shelves are, a head of department who does not emphasise self-evaluation is unlikely to be regarded as a good manager.

Further information about the implications of self-evaluation for your department is provided in this section.
