The Framework

The Framework is for all inspections currently carried out under Section 5 of the Education Act 2005, which replaced Section 10 of the Schools Inspection Act 1996 in England. (Note that Estyn, the office of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales, continues to inspect schools under Section 10 of the Schools Inspection Act 1996). It is available to download from the Ofsted Web site:

The Framework sets out the principles applicable to the inspection of schools. It comprises four parts:

Guidance on the inspection system, including the principles of inspections and inspection teams.

Information about the inspection process and the procedure for schools causing concern.

The common inspection schedule for schools and other post-16 provision.

The code of conduct for inspectors, and the procedure for handling complaints and concerns about inspections.
