Introduction

The Government continues to cite Ofsted inspections as a key to continuing school improvement. From September 2005, there are two forms of inspection: institutional inspections and subject/survey inspections. This resource is designed to help you, as the head of the Art & Design department, prepare for both kinds of inspection.

In many ways, the preparation for institutional inspection contributes to your readiness for a subject/survey inspection. This section provides background information about both kinds of inspection, and the arrangements which came into force in September 2005.
