Teaching and learning

The diagram on the handout below is a summary of the process of teaching and learning in Art and Design. It reduces the key principles of integrating a response to the work of other artists with art activity in a school.

This is of course a huge simplification; however, it can be very useful in explaining to KS3 students why we look at other art work, and how we can use this experience. This is a naturally artistic approach – we can’t imagine Cubism without Picasso’s enthusiasm for African art, for example, since ‘art feeds art’. This approach is essential to the National Curriculum in Art and Design, and the development of critical studies as a key part of all Art and Design courses has ensured that this basic understanding continues to grow.

The handout can also be very useful for students at Key Stage 4 and 5, as an aid for discussion and planning.
