Mental Arithmetic: Policy and Practice

Jenny Murray

Essential guidance

The education system, and primary schools in particular, are facing mounting criticism over children's level of numeracy relative to their peers in other countries. Problems with mental arithmetic are highlighted and the Government has already indicated its determination to improve standards. This now extended series of publications will help primary schools plan and then implement an appropriate policy; provide a host of classroom activities to develop the necessary skills; and give specific practice for the mental arithmetic test itself.

The aim of the series is to help primary schools provide essential assistance, in the form of a host of classroom activities, to those implementing a policy on mental arithmetic and numeracy.
