Write and Produce Your Own School Play

Graeme Kent

Popular topics for your school 's performances

These outlines for school and class plays provide teachers with all the material they need to write and produce their own drama projects with children, at the same time covering many of the requirements of the National Curriculum in English at KS1 and KS2.

The plays are intended for all the children in the school to take part so that the production forms an important and enjoyable aspect of the school's life. For each play it is suggested that there is an overall producer but that each class and teacher in the school be responsible for one of the individual scenes. These scenes have been specifically constructed so that they take account of the ages and abilities of the children taking part, from those aged 4+ in Scene 1 right through to 11 year olds in Scene 7. The scenes enable every child in each class to contribute.

Each teacher is given an outline of the action of their scene, a list of the characters involved and descriptions of simple costumes and scenery required. They may then work on the scene with their children, developing their own dialogue, songs and actions.

The material has been written by an experienced primary headteacher who is also an award winning stage, radio and television playwright. A number of the pieces have been broadcast by the BBC with all the 280 pupils in his school taking part.
