Make a real difference
Schools are under increasing pressure to look carefully at their gifted and talented provision in every subject – particularly because of the introduction of the Institutional Quality Standards (IQS) and Classroom Quality Standards (CQS), which are to be used as evaluation tools to improve provision.
The Gifted and Talented in... series helps schools to:
- evaluate their existing provision
- raise achievement in the higher ability cohort
- support staff who encounter able students
- offer appropriate personalised learning to students.
Take a whole school approach
The introductory CD-ROM in the series, Gifted and Talented in Your School, includes the following:
- About – Background information.
- Manage – Guidance on managing provision.
- Process – The cycle of improving practice.
- Identify – Ways to identify able students.
- Provide – How to improve pedagogy.
- Theory – Research about intelligence.
- Support – Catering for students’ social/emotional needs.
There is then a CD-ROM for each curriculum department – either encourage your colleagues to purchase their own disc, or buy the series for the school at a substantially reduced price.
Subject-specific, department-led
It can be hard to find subject-specific material on key issues regarding gifted and talented provision. Each CD-ROM in the Gifted and Talented in... series offers a head of department:
- audits using the Classroom Quality Standards (CQS)
- advice on how the department’s existing resources may cover the CQS
- a sample policy on gifted and talented provision in the department
- tried-and-tested approaches to gifted and talented provision.
A range of handy checklists and handouts is also included. All the material can be adapted for the department’s particular needs.
Focused support for able students
Finding specialist resources for gifted and talented students can be difficult. The Gifted and Talented in... series is designed to help staff provide focused, personalised material for their students that:
- is practical and easy-to-use
- can be used straight away in the classroom
- supports students through enrichment, extension and/or acceleration.
This includes a selection of useful curriculum resources for KS3 and KS4/GCSE.
Ready-to-use material
The Gifted and Talented in... series looks at how individual subject departments can help each student develop their full potential. The material includes:
- a student register, in which the department can record why each student was selected as ‘gifted and talented’, and on what evidence the decision was based
- how the department’s existing resources cover the appropriate Classroom Quality Standards
- how to track a student’s progress and balance the demands placed on the student
- how to run a stimulating programme of activities which keeps students motivated
- how to offer gifted and talented material as part of an extended schools programme
- how to stimulate a wider appreciation of the curriculum subject.
Each CD-ROM comes with a full site licence, so the material can be placed on a network and distributed freely within your school.
