PRS Toolkit
Validating performance management reviewers
The Education (School Teacher Performance Management) (England) Regulations 2006 directly link teachers’ performance with their eligibility for pay increases. This makes the role of performance management reviewer (which may fall on line managers or on the headteacher) a challenging one.
- Headteachers and governors want to be assured that their reviewers work consistently within school performance management, pay and CPD policies, and that they provide all reviewees with the appropriate levels of support.
- Reviewers want to feel confident in their ability and to have credibility as a reviewer.
- Reviewees and their unions want assurance that they will be treated fairly and equitably, and that there are proper quality-assurance procedures in place.
The PRS Toolkit helps you to do all this by establishing a scheme to recognise Professional Reviewer Status (PRS).
A supportive solution
The PRS Toolkit includes:
- An optional day of training on the review process and how to manage reviewers
- Use of an online assessment system for validating reviewers in your school
- A CD-ROM of guidance with handy forms and checklists for implementing performance management in your school.
Key support for managers
Making performance management effective can be a challenge, particularly when adopting the revised performance management regulations. For those managing reviewers in your school, the task of overseeing the process can be daunting. The concise and effective training day enables managers to get up to speed on the delivery of reviews, and how to train other reviewers in the school.
Simple validation for reviewers
The revised performance management regulations demand considerable additional knowledge. To assure to all your staff (and their unions) that reviews – and pay recommendations – will be fair, consistent and in line with the school’s policies as well as professional standards, an online assessment system can be used in your school. Each reviewer’’s response is verified by the headteacher or other senior colleague, so that the school can demonstrate that its chosen reviewers are fit for purpose.
Informing staff
Introducing staff and reviewers to the new requirements, and ensuring that the regulations are followed effectively, can be difficult. The PRS Resources CD-ROM offers a set of time-saving resources to help everyone involved. Guidance, presentations, handy checklists, forms and letter templates are provided.
The CD-ROM covers the roles of:
- Governors
- Headteachers
- Reviewers of teachers
- Reviewers of support staff
- Teachers
- Support staff.
In addition, the disc offers:
- An overview of the whole process
- How to deal with complaints and appeals
- Implementing –and revising– policies and protocols
- Linking performance management with school improvement
- Providing performance management for support staff.
