Progression in KS3 PE
Jill Cutler
Using and applying the National Curriculum level descriptions can be problematic in PE lessons. They may not be easily accessible, and sometimes they do not provide enough detail for students to assess their own standard, and to see at a glance how they need to improve in order to progress to a higher level.
Activity-specific assessment material
Progression in KS3 PE provides activity-specific level descriptions for a variety of sports at Levels 3-8, matching and elaborating on the National Curriculum requirements. The resource has recently been updated for the revised 2008 curriculum.
All provided on one CD-ROM, the level descriptions are designed to be distributed to students, so that each student has a paper copy to refer to during their lesson, and to establish how they can progress. The handouts can also be laminated and posted on the department notice board.
An ideal resource for teachers
The level descriptions are ideal for assessing pupils against the National Curriculum requirements. In addition, Progression in KS3 PE includes guidance on:
- monitoring performance
- recording student progression
- setting targets
- tracking students’ own assessments
- assessing students’ standards at the beginning of Year 7 and at the end of KS3.
Since Progression in KS3 PE helps students understand how they are being assessed and the reasons why they are being given a particular level, the resource is ideal for meeting the recommendations of Assessment for Learning (AfL).
Real support for independent learning
Progression in KS3 PE offers a useful method for peer assessment – students can use the level descriptions to identify their personal targets to reach the next level, and to assess the progress of their peers. This helps students develop a better understanding of the curriculum, and of how they are assessed. The level descriptions are presented in a student-friendly language, making them approachable and useful for a wide range of academic abilities.
Level descriptors for a range of activities
Levels are provided for all National Curriculum areas of activity in PE, including:
- athletics
- badminton
- basketball

The material is specifically tailored to cater for most of the sports that students will encounter during KS3.
