The development of a piece of drama from improvisation to rehearsed presentation is an important element in GCSE/A-level Drama and Performing Arts courses. This pack provides a carefully compiled set of materials to support both teacher and student. It is divided into three sections:

Section 1: This provides a working guide to the process of enabling students to select, shape and present their work. It shows how specific drama techniques can encourage the students to explore the possibilities of the drama form. It covers:

• What the examiner looks for
• How to help students select content
• How to set up groups and kick-start the process
• Techniques to develop character and plot
• Detailed drama techniques which show the students how to develop the full potential of their dramatic piece.
• Photocopiable sheets that support the student throughout the process.

Sections 2 and 3 cover the following information:

• Section 2 –This section offers a number of ideas and outlines for projects to develop into rehearsed presentations.
• Section 3 – A detailed set of improvisation lessons based on the problems caused by litter in the secondary school. The lessons offer students the opportunity to develop the improvisations into a purposeful presentation.

The project is also ideal for Key Stage 3 students and makes a worthwhile contribution to whole school policy. The lessons are accompanied by photocopiable material for students, evaluation sheets and ideas for developing the project across the curriculum.
