Series: Mental Arithmetic: Policy and Practice
Pack 2: Classroom Practice
Jenny Houssart
This highly practical publication offers hundreds of activity outlines for mental arithmetic right across Key Stages 1 and 2. Enjoyable and non-threatening, they concentrate mainly on aspects of mathematics and other areas of the curriculum are also addressed. The activities use a range of starting points designed to be interesting and relevant to children. These include calculations arising from:
- Number cards, dice and spinners
- Sports and games
- Coins, stamps, catalogues and the saving or spending of money
- Newspapers, sweet packets, calendars and sticker albums.
Each section is introduced through general points and suggestions. Within each section, the first activities are aimed at the youngest children and become progressively more difficult. There is ample scope for whole class and group teaching and providing the necessary continuity and progression. The outlines themselves are aimed at the teacher and set out four to an A4 page. When copied and cut up, they form a bank of 320 tried and tested ideas.
