Supporting the Able Pupil
Dr Mike Kirby
Helps meet Ofsted criticisms
Ofsted reports frequently suggest that schools strengthen their provision for pupils of above average ability in particular subjects and/or across the curriculum. Extending bright pupils presents particular problems and this pack is sensitive both to these and the varied circumstances of different schools.
A whole school approach
Supporting the Able Pupil contains a range of materials for helping governors and senior staff to develop a school policy for meeting the needs of their most able pupils. The resource provides a step-by-step guide to the planning process – from reviewing existing practice to implementing particular teaching programmes and compiling reports for Ofsted.
Catering for the most able students successfully requires a whole school approach which provides the necessary challenges, continuity and progression. Supporting the Able Pupil sets out to do just this. Different approaches and methods are summarised, together with a discussion of key issues. Teacher support materials offer guidelines on classroom practice and how to identify pupils of above average ability.
