Sex Education
Jenny Harrison
Practical whole school resource
Sex Education shows teachers how they can meet their obligation to provide a comprehensive sex education programme within the constraints of the statutory guidelines. The pack can be used in a number of contexts: as a document for a school working party on sex education; within a broader context of health education; as support for dialogue with parents and community groups; and for schools' staff development and curriculum planning.
Lists of resources and organisations, information sheets, exemplar planners and a range of briefing materials are included. Forms for gaining feedback from staff and students are also provided.
The pack is divided into three sections including:
- Overview; what is meant by ‘the health promoting school’?; and the various meanings of sex education.
- Setting up procedures to establish a whole school policy – forming a working party; seeking ways to involve all parents; involving students in identifying their needs; and monitoring policy and setting targets.
- Management and coordination – review and audit of sex education; diagnosing staff training needs; establishing students' needs; evaluating the policy, planning and programme; how to use outside organisations; and examples of good practice.
