Religious Education: A Whole School Guide
Graeme Kent and Mike Kirby
Ideas for assemblies and study materials
Religious Education: A Whole School Guide is a major publication which provides a complete framework for the planning, development and delivery of Religious Education in the secondary school. It takes into account the Model Syllabuses for Religious Education (SCAA) and will help meet the needs of any school irrespective of the Agreed Syllabus to which they are working.
To meet the increased demands now being placed on RE provision, this revised edition offers more detailed guidance on complying with Ofsted’s Framework for the inspection of schools. The material is divided into a number of sections and the huge collection of ideas and information can be used as individual units, integrated parts or as a coherent whole. The licence to copy allows any member of staff to have their own copy of relevant pages and all student material can be copied as required.
A: Planning guide
This section provides an overview to the pack plus:
- A 'review' kit to enable schools to assess existing policy and provision
- Outlines to demonstrate how schools can integrate work in different years and courses into a coherent whole to meet their statutory obligations
- Greater assistance with drafting and presenting planning and development documents for reporting to: governors; parents; SACREs; and Ofsted inspection teams.
B: Assemblies
An imaginative and carefully structured bank of ideas for whole school, year group and class assemblies. They incorporate acts of worship and/or appropriate secular activities. The material can be used on its own or as an introduction to work within RE lessons, PSHE courses or General Studies. The outlines are written to fit in with both school and religious calendars. Although predominantly Christian in approach, they provide numerous opportunities to reflect other faiths and beliefs.
C: Study materials
This section forms the core of the publication and provides a wealth of material designed to help schools deliver an Agreed Syllabus in the classroom. For Key Stage 3, there are ten activity outlines for each term of Years 7, 8 and 9. There is a main subject for each term which is developed through the ten activities. For Key Stage 4 and post-16 education, there are major sections covering: Christianity (18 topics); Judaism (18 topics); Islam (12 topics); and Hinduism (12 topics).
D: Reference material
This section supports all the others by providing lists of resources and useful organisations.
