Performance management
The
Education (School Teacher Performance Management) (England) Regulations 2006 set out revised procedures for performance management in schools. These also state that the outcomes of performance management should form the basis of decisions about pay and career progression.
If teachers are able to demonstrate their performance with compelling evidence, perhaps collected in a portfolio, they are likely to be in a strong position in their performance management review. This is particularly true if their evidence is organised around the revised professional standards for teachers, which may be used as a framework when assessing a teacher’s performance (and where appropriate, their pay).
The Government continues to emphasise the links between performance management and CPD for all teachers. The evaluation of a teacher’s performance should be followed by plans on ways to improve further. For these reasons, the performance management review is the main time when a teacher’s CPD portfolio is going to be put to use. The performance management process is therefore outlined in this section.
