Introduction

Since 2002, schools have had to teach citizenship to all 11- to 16-year-olds. Your school may deliver citizenship through subjects like PSHE, or you may have a specific period on your timetable for citizenship. This resource has been designed to help you learn about citizenship. Your teacher will explain how she/he would like you to use this resource.

What is citizenship?

Citizenship: the state of being, or having rights and duties of a citizen... the conduct in relation to these duties’

The Chambers Dictionary

‘Citizenship education will enhance understanding of, and participation in, our democratic, legal and other civic processes’

Rt Hon Betty Boothroyd

‘Create a society where people matter more than things’

Archbishop Desmond Tutu
